ADSL against Fiber Optics

ADSL, fiber optic …. two words very related to our Internet connection. Choosing an internet plan can be a difficult task, thanks to the amount of available options, speeds, companies and other aspects that complicate the election. Apart from that, there is a factor that can determine our choice: Fiber optic or ADSL? If this is the first time you hear the terms, do not worry, it is not as complicated as it seems, but it is a determining factor once you know its benefits and disadvantages.

ADSL or OPTICAL FIBER …

How to identify them?
In order to know the differences that exist between both types of wiring, it is necessary to know them first:

ADSL

ADSL.
ADSL. Router y conexiones.

It is the most common wiring type worldwide and the most known by all. It really is very basic, since it uses a standard copper phone line. It is the system that has been implemented for much longer and has its own advantages and disadvantages. The ADSL is named after its name in English, Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, or Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line.

One of the main disadvantages of using this type of wiring is that its speed depends on the distance that the cable runs from your home to the central telephone wiring. This means that it will not always be the same for everyone. In the most remote places the speed can be lower.

An advantage is the ease of repair, since it is a system that has been on the market for years, it is easier to solve any fault. Also, for that reason it is widely used in towns and rural areas, where access to the Internet can be given thanks to copper telephone lines.

Optical fiber

Honestly, fiber optic has the potential to win in different aspects: it is better, faster and more reliable than any ADSL line, and does not work with copper wiring, since it is composed of thicker plastic or glass threads. Fiber optic is a system that takes less time on the market than the standard ADSL. Currently, fiber optic is being offered by all telecommunications companies.

The speed is the determining factor of the Optical Fiber, since it is constant throughout the wiring section. If you measure the speed of the internet, you will always have the same result. One of the main differences is that ADSL cabling has a very limited maximum speed, below the standard plans offered by fiber optic cabling.

The winner?

Fiber optics, without doubts. Despite being a relatively new system, it came to replace the ADSL cabling. In the not too distant future, it will be the standard connection for all homes and businesses.
